The B-4 was the less expensive manual focus companion to the autofocus
B-3. The column was extruded aluminum similar to the B-3, but the B-4 had
a "lift and lock" elevation system as compared to the B-3's rack and
pinion system. And while the B-3 had an adjustable triple condenser
system, the B-4 came with double condensers requiring supplementary
condensers for printing 6x6 and 35mm formats. The supplementary condenser
lens for 50mm or 75mm lenses was purchased together with the corresponding lensmount.
Rather than the
familiar system using brass focus rods, focusing on the B-4 used a knob
operated cam system. The lamp used in the B-4 was the small PH111,
allowing the lamphouse to be made smaller compared to that on the Super B
Used Advice:
Still useable if complete and in good condition, but not as convenient to
use as later models. All parts and accessories have been discontinued for
decades. |
